Death, The Devil and Martin Bora

Ukraine, 1941. It all begins with Operation Barbarossa, the Nazi attack against the Soviet Union. Among the first to ride across the border is a young German cavalry captain: his name is Martin Bora, a professional soldier, and an investigator despite himself. Well-educated, coolheaded, stern but compassionate, even in Russia Bora will have to prove his sleuthing skills, stumbling as he soon does into the mutilated corpse of a farm woman. But this “body in search of justice” is only the first piece of a puzzle that from Russia moves out to Prague under the bloody heel of Reinhard Heydrich’s Protectorate, and then to other places and other conflicts, with new and diverse protagonists. One chapter at a time, between crime scenes and crime scenarios, ghostly entities, spy stories, traumatic memories of the Great War and of the Spanish Civil War, this detection symphony turns into a veritable voyage through European history and its most shameful deeds. In the end, we reach not only the heart of each mystery, but also, symbolically, the root of some of the archetypes that have fashioned the Western World: The Horseman, Death, and the Devil…
